Brief Overview:

This is a shooting workshop where you will learn how to photograph wedding portraits in authentic wedding locations.

The course is for a very small group of no more than 4 people.

There will be a model bride and groom in bridal attire. The bride's hair and make-up will be done by a professional stylist and make-up artist. The bride will also have a lovely artificial bouquet of flowers and the groom a button hole.

The course teaches you how to adapt to different lighting conditions and environments to achieve stunning portraits.

You will go away from the course having gained knowledge in this area and maybe even some really nice images that you could potentially use for your portfolio.

Please see the bottom of the page for more detail on the day.

Costs:

£50 deposit to secure your place and the balance (£139) no later than 2 weeks before the course.
Total: £189

Who is this course for?

For those that have aspirations of becoming a professional wedding photographer or wish to gain knowledge and experience taking portraits on location. I have also had people attend who are planning to photograph a friend's wedding and want to be as prepared as possible to give them the best results.

Course participants should have a fairly good understanding of their camera settings and in particular should know how to change ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speeds and use Exposure Compensation. Tuition will be given as to what settings work best for each scenario when shooting but understanding how to get to those settings would be a big advantage and will mean you get the most out of the workshop.

If you don't already have the above skills, please consider a short 1-2-1 Camera Confidence course with me which will prepare you for this workshop.

Objectives of the day:

The course aims to give participants a good understanding of how to adapt to different lighting conditions that the various environments will give us.

We will cover technical aspects such as which settings will work best to produce great results.

In addition to the technical side we will also discuss how to best frame your images for dynamic compositions.

We will also discuss how to pose the bride and groom and techniques to make them feel relaxed and get great portraits.

Another skill we will look at is how to spot a good location and perhaps even more importantly, how to see where the good light is!

We will learn about...

  • Shooting modes
  • Adapting to different lighting conditions
  • Fill-in flash
  • Using reflectors
  • Posing your Bride and Groom
  • Compsoition
  • Spotting a good location (and light!)

What will you need?

  • A camera: a Digital SLR (DSLR) or Compact System Camera (CSC)
  • A lens or lenses*
  • A flash gun if you have one
  • A pen and pad to make some notes

*A kit lens of 18-55mm is absolutely fine but if you have other lenses you wish to bring and use then please be my guest. Prime (non-zoom) lenses also work well as they have wide apertures which is good for shooting inside. Longer zoom lenses work well for when shooting from the background whilst another participant is being taught. If you are unsure at all please feel free to contact me via the contact link at the top of page.

This course is limited to 4 participants only.

Price includes lunch (sandwiches)

Further Detail

The course is run in Crowborough in East Sussex which has direct rail link to London Bridge and is easy to get to from the coast by public transport also.

The course is for a very small group of no more than 4 people.

We have two fabulous models for the day who will be in full wedding attire. The female model will have her hair and make-up done to a professional standard. We also have an artificial bouquet for the bride and button hole for the groom.

Half of the course will be run at the local church in Crowborough, with their kind permission we are allowed to use both the interiors and exteriors. This is a great to take some beautiful Bride & Groom portraits in an authentic location.

We will break for lunch around 1.00pm and sandwiches are provided for you. When booking please stated if you have have any dietary requirements or preference of sandwich.

We will also head to a beautiful local wedding venue where we can take some photos around the grounds. Hendall Manor Farm is a wonderful modern converted barn and offers some great opportunities for more relaxed portraits. The venue is relatively new but have been making a name for themselves as one of the leading wedding venues locally.

The day is loosely split in to 4 shooting sessions. Everyone will get a good amount of time shooting with the couple with me on hand at all times to help.

On the day we will be looking at various techniques to suit the conditions on the day. The beauty is that it's just like a proper wedding in that respect, we don't know what the weather will be like and we will adapt to that and shoot accordingly.

Some of the techniques we might use are:

  • Natural light
  • Window light
  • Reflectors
  • Shade
  • Flash (on camera)
  • Flash (off camera)

We will be at settings such as:

  • Aperture Priority
  • Exposure Compensation
  • Manual Exposure
  • Taking Evaluative and Spot light readings

The course starts at 11.00am, there will be a short introduction by myself and we will start shooting with the models at around 11.30am. The day will finish at 4pm.

Because of the overheads involved I do have to have at least 3 people to make this course go ahead. To secure your place I'm asking for a deposit of just £50 which will be refunded if the course doesn't go ahead, of course we hope it won't come to that and so far courses have been fully booked. The balance of the course fee will be payable no later than 1 week before the shoot and I will invoice you for that.

The total price of the course is £189.
To secure your place on the course you just pay a deposit of £50 and the balance of £139 will be due no later than 2 weeks before the shoot and will be invoiced by email.

Previous participants have traveled some considerable distance to attend this course, even as far as Leicester. For those wishing to travel from further away, I can recommend a great Bed & Breakfast which is just a few minutes walk from my studio. Hill Cottage is run by Maggie & Ted Hirst and is a lovely 17th century cottage which comes highly recommended from previous course participants.

Crowborough is a fairly small town and has some beautiful surrounding countryside if you wish to extend your stay and spend some time enjoying it. Crowborough has a Country Park which was converted from an old quarry, it has The Ghyll Nature Reserve and not far away the Ashdown Forest.

Course Attended:
Wedding Photography Shoot Workshop

This workshop was very enjoyable, with a good range of techniques covered. The content and training was pitched at the right level for the group, giving time for attendees to explore their own creative ideas, with support from Andy on key aspects as required. Guidance and options to consider were provided, and a good balance between structure and freedom was achieved. I am pleased with the images obtained, and will take confidence from this workshop for future wedding shoots.

I have no hesitation in recommending Andy's training as he creates a friendly, supportive and welcoming environment within which to learn.

A very practical, well organised and informative course. It is not hard to see why Andy's courses draw in attendees from across the country. We had two brilliant models (bride and groom) for the day and covered all eventualities - outside /inside church and outside /inside reception venue. There is no better way to develop confidence for a wedding shoot than through practical experience. This course helped ensure you recognise the key challenges and know how best to address them. In particular the need to know where you want the shots (given the light). We covered flash and fill-in flash in some detail (although this is another course in itself) and the use of soft-box type lighting, and reflectors. Being with other photographers interested in Wedding photography helped stimulate creative juices and provided a great deal of inspiration for future shoots. Perhaps next time we can also cover the challenges of 'group shots'. In short, a very helpful introduction and excellent value for money.

Wedding Photography Shoot Workshop

I was a little hesitant initially due to my lack of experience but Andy made everything flow smoothly and made everyone feel at ease and it was a great time. I came away with a lot more technical knowledge, more confidence in going for the shot and a new portfolio section of wedding photography images.

The course is excellent value for money and I can't speak highly enough about it. I recommend this course for anyone thinking of moving into wedding photography and wants to work with a professional to find out if they would enjoy this type of shooting as a job, or just anyone who fancies a photographic opportunity that this provides.

Thanks Andy
