Brilliant short course, well worth it!

As a non-techie I just needed some basic training to get the most of my camera that you can't get from an instruction manual.

Andrew was a random 'pick' from the internet after a little research, and I feel that I was very lucky to choose Andrew to introduce me to the key principles. He makes sure he is 'training for need' and targeted the time exactly to my requirements. He is a superb trainer and gives you plenty of time to think, and ask questions.

He replied quickly to my original enquiry, arranged a course to suit and the admin surrounding it was impeccable. Transport links his studio are convenient and there's an independent coffee place just over the road from his studio that is great for a short break.

Once I have had a bit of practice I hope to attend some sort of upgrade training. Don't hesitate to use Andrew if you are thinking of doing a course, you'll get great training/help.

He's helped out with some queries I have had since the course as well. Great to get 5 star service!

This time last year the only thing I knew about taking a photo was the point and shoot. I had shown interest in taking photography up as a hobby, as a passionate gardener I wanted to learn to photograph flowers.

My husband very kindly brought me Andrew's photoclub technical part 1 course (held in a local pub). The first evening I attended the course as a complete novice using a borrowed camera, Andrew immediately made me feel very welcome and his method of teaching with his notes and very clear instructions made me feel at ease and I enjoyed attending and learning so much from knowing so little.

When I wanted to invest in my own camera Andrew took the time to explain the differences in the cameras and what functions to look out for that would suit my kind of photography.

Last year I went on a photo walk around Sheffield Park NT Andrew was not only there to answer any questions we had he was part of a fun group of people to spend a day taking photos and talking photography with.

Just last week I attended Love Fuji x course. Andrew took a small group around Borough Market in London and explained in detail but very clearly how to make the most of our cameras.

I am often revisiting the website to see if I can book another course and would recommend this to anyone... Even a complete beginner.

I really enjoyed the Love Fuji course in London. Andrew is incredibly friendly and instantly put us all at ease. We had a very informative lesson in the coffee shop followed by the chance to put our new-found learnings into practice on the streets of London.

All the while Andrew was on hand to give us a hands-on assistance to help improve our camera work; I actually found this the most useful aspect. Then it was back to a pub to review our images, gain some helpful feedback and the chance to see each others shots.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend a course with Andrew both in terms of improving your photography and as a fun day out.

Andrew creates a relaxed and fun environment to learn in - which makes for an easygoing to rewarding day.  You can ask anything, and you will get a great answer to any question - Andy has great knowledge and skill which he shares in a practical and straightforward way. The theory is covered in a way which makes it understandable… and Andy will go back an explain anything you don’t understand. He has a knack of making things clear.

Shooting in a small group is great fun and really helped my gain confidence quickly with my Fuji X series. Andy provided support and inspiration - with a series of exercises to get us going; he’s got a great creative eye and picks locations where there’s plenty of subject matter to get your teeth into. He’s around to provide support and answer questions when needed, and leaves you to get on with it if you’re in the zone and snapping away. Alongside all this he’s good fun to spend a few hours with chatting photography.

When it comes to feedback Andrew gives helpful and constructive feedback in a relaxed environment - it got me thinking about how to develop as a photographer and how to work on my style and technique in the future. Working with Andy for a day was a real boost to my confidence, gave me a good grounding in how to use my kit and was an inspiration

I have never written a testimonial before but the help, support and training I have received from Andy Newson 's studio has been so exceptional I felt compelled to write.

I have been interested in Photography for several years, I had a good camera but lacked the knowledge and skill to use it properly and was constantly disappointed, and frustrated by my poor images, to the point of giving up.

Due to acute anxiety, attending courses straight away would have been too difficult. Together Andy & I worked out a suitable training programme, which started with my assistance dog accompanying me whilst having one to one training sessions at Andy's studio, progressing as I gained confidence and camera skills to attending Andy's courses.

I have now attended several of Andy's courses, gone on his photowalks, learnt loads, had fun, met great people and now have images I can put on my wall.

Andy's patience, teaching methods, encouragement and ongoing support have been outstanding and truly valued. In a way he has opened up the world of photography for me and I can not recommend him enough.

I first found Andy and his courses through my friend Caroline Russell (see below testimonial), having always "dabbled" with snapping pictures but wanting to achieve more. First came a 1-2-1 with Andy where he took me on a short walk near my home and showed me how to use my camera properly...always a help! Then I joined the Photoclub Creative Course which met in a pub (great fun!). Here Andy helps any level of photographer to find their inner artist, and immediately I was creating pictures I never thought possible. Through Andy's help...whether online or in person, I have graduated from a bridge camera to a "proper" one, have learned how to use different lenses, edit my pictures to produce great pictures, and given me the confidence to take my camera wherever I go...even to go with him and others to the Lakes - a great feet for me.
If you want to learn how to become a great photographer, then look no further than Andrew Newson.
I am about to sign up for more courses!

My story … I bought my first film camera in 1976 but had never learnt to use it properly! Since then technology has moved on and I started toying with the idea of buying a DSLR camera but hadn’t a clue which way to turn, let alone how to use one!

So, a little over three years ago I Googled: photographers and classes in Kent. Andrew Newson’s website jumped out at me – friendly and informative. I phoned Andrew and asked him “… which camera should I buy?” Andy didn’t know me or indeed whether I would ever attend any of his courses yet he spent about an hour+ discussing cameras most suitable for me as a beginner. He was spot on and with my new DSLR I attended a 1-2-1 course to get me started.

I joined a number of Photowalks and Photoclub Creative, completing 3 terms. Skipped a term but still joined in a couple of assignments. (Well, I missed it!) Not being able to stay away, I have re-joined this term with the Photoclub Technical group, and loving it. I have learnt a huge amount from Andy. He is enthusiastic and patient and I am gaining in confidence and loving the challenges he sets, not to mention visiting places I would never normally go (an education in itself) I have met some really terrific like-minded people and I always look forward to the Photowalks, Classes and seeing everyone’s amazing images.

Next week I am joining Andy and a group in the Lake District. Yes, I’m excited to be able to put my skills to the test but also I know Andy will be there if I need help.

Without hesitation I recommend him.
A big thank you Andy.

You will not find a more patient, creative and inspiring photography teacher than Andy.

Approaching my 30th birthday (knowing nothing in particular about the technical side of photography) I decided that I wanted to be a professional photographer. I stumbled across Andy's Photoclub Creative course & that is truly where my journey began - through photoclub Andy inspired creativity and completely taught me the technical side of photography.

I have also had some 1-2-1 teaching with Andy, during which we covered the more frustrating elements of digital development, as well as how to keep a really tidy and efficient workspace - this is how I know that his patience, honestly, knows no bounds...!

Lastly, I went to a wedding workshop run by Andy where I picked up so many invaluable tips and tricks - it took so much of the stress out of the first wedding I shot & I used everything I'd learned during the workshop.

I am now approaching the end of my first full year as a professional photographer - I definitely wouldn't be here without Andy. If you're thinking about enrolling on one of his courses - or training sessions - stop thinking & sign up!!

Having owned a DSLR for 3 years, I've become more interested in photography as a hobby, but always felt the need to learn the important basics of taking a good picture and to receive a professional's feedback of the results.

I was given my Photography course as a surprise Christmas gift, and found it very useful and enjoyable.

Andrew takes time to explain the the key principles in a user friendly way, and then leads a small group on a London walk which offers both plenty of good photo opportunities and time for coaching of individual participants by him as the day progresses.

The day concludes with a review of each participants' photos, with feedback and advice.

This is a worthwhile session for any new photographer, and I'm pleased to be able to recommend it.

This was a fantastic couse. I have never used a DSLR camera before - never. Andrew was great. After a very informative hour talking about camera settings we set off to take pictures. Andrew gave his advice and insights at various points during the walk. He was very supportive and was able to give everyone help - always in a constructive way.

The group that attended was of mixed levels and he adapted his input to suit everyone's personally.

A great course. I highly recommend it.

We all met in a coffee shop and went over the course agenda for the day and definitions as well as the settings on our cameras. We then set off around Borough market including the area around Tower Bridge. We finished off in a lovely pub to review the photos we had taken; Andy spent time critiquing all the photos, giving really good advice to make my photos better.

Andy was very knowledgeable and approachable. He left you to get on with it whilst being available if you got stuck with anything or needed any help.

I really enjoyed this course and came away feeling happy with everything we covered. I would happily attend other courses run by Andy.

I am embarrassed to admit to owning a DSLR for 10 years without really getting to grips with it. Andrew took an hour or so at the beginning of the day to talk us through the basics and make sure that we understood how to set our cameras up and then was on hand throughout the day to give advice and tuition. It was great to spend time in that part of London where there is so much to see and take pictures of and I think we all gained a lot of confidence during the day. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. We did have a lovely group of people, and we finished in the pub for a review of the pictures, which was a welcome finale!

  • 121 Training in Studio Product Photography

The aim of this course was to learn how to take good product photographs of my handmade jewellery for use online and in print.

I had little experience with my DSLR camera other than auto mode, so there was a lot to learn! Andy was a very patient teacher and clear in his descriptions of what I needed to do. We started out with a basic understanding of all the controls on the camera and how to use them for day to day use. Then he went on to give me advice on the products I would need to purchase to create professional looking images, followed by a detailed instruction on how to create good product shots using my camera. He also touched on the subject of software which is the next part of the process I would like to improve at.

I came away from the 3 hour session with all the information I needed to start creating good product photos. I have since purchased the light tent and lights and am delighted with the results compared to my efforts before the course. I still need more practice and will no doubt be back for more information as I progress.

It was also really valuable to be able to ask questions whilst I was ordering new products to make sure I was ordering the right ones. Andy always responded very quickly to my requests by email which was very helpful.

Andy's love of photography makes him a very enthusiastic tutor and his positive attitude coupled with his clear understanding of the subject make the experience of learning this craft most enjoyable.

The course is excellent value for money and I can't speak highly enough about it. A very practical, well organised and informative course. It is not hard to see why Andy's courses draw in attendees from across the country. We had two brilliant models (bride and groom) for the day and covered all eventualities - outside /inside church and outside /inside reception venue. There is no better way to develop confidence for a wedding shoot than through practical experience. This course helped ensure you recognise the key challenges and know how best to address them. In particular the need to know where you want the shots (given the light). We covered flash and fill-in flash in some detail (although this is another course in itself) and the use of soft-box type lighting, and reflectors. Being with other photographers interested in Wedding photography helped stimulate creative juices and provided a great deal of inspiration for future shoots. Perhaps next time we can also cover the challenges of 'group shots'. In short, a very helpful introduction and excellent value for money.

This workshop was very enjoyable, with a good range of techniques covered. The content and training was pitched at the right level for the group, giving time for attendees to explore their own creative ideas, with support from Andy on key aspects as required. Guidance and options to consider were provided, and a good balance between structure and freedom was achieved. I am pleased with the images obtained, and will take confidence from this workshop for future wedding shoots.

I have no hesitation in recommending Andy's training as he creates a friendly, supportive and welcoming environment within which to learn.

I have been practicing and gaining more experience in photography over the last year or so but after feeling I had gotten a little stuck, wanting more information and support to take my photography further I chose to go on one of Andy's 1-2-1 Courses in his studio in Crowborough. I chose this course as I felt I wanted to ask a lot of questions, a good number of them being quite specific to the camera that Andy and I both use - the Fuji-Film X-Pro1 and I didn't want to bore any other poor person if it had been a group!

Andy was very easy to talk to and friendly right from the word go, he has such great passion for photography, sharing his knowledge and for teaching others. His wealth of knowledge and ability to communicate about all areas of photography in a way that I could understand them, helping me to visualise different techniques in real life situations for example was incredibly helpful. He has helped me to gain more confidence in my camera which is renowned for sometimes taking some time to master and I hope to continue putting into practice all of the different techniques that we discussed.

Since taking the course Andy has also offered support to me over email if I have had any questions, I feel that this is certainly going the extra mile for his clients and has been very much appreciated as his advice has been fantastic and invaluable to me. I would very much like to attend another course in the future and I would not hesitate in recommending Andy's courses to anyone considering a photography course to help them regardless of their ability.

Many thanks once again.

Coupled with getting a new camera for Christmas, I also received a Photo club in the Pub course. I must admit I initially thought I would be in the pub surrounded by camera geeks!  I was completely wrong, a mix of capabilities and a really lovely bunch of people. This course has been great for learning my way around the new camera and experimenting with images I wouldn't have even thought of taking, or would be interested in. I would recommend this course for anyone wishing to get thinking and shoot something different.  I now have some great pictures up on the walls of my daughter's playroom as a result of the still life assignment. Having received the very generous gift of vouchers from our other halves allowing us a three hour two to one session with Andy, a friend and I were incredibly impressed by what we got from that session.

Despite nearly 20 years of photography experience between us, we were both keen to improve the standard of our pictures, and Andy was able to bring a new perspective to the process, unearthing one of those 'eureka' moments for both of us that has already made a massive difference to the number of shots that work first time.

Andy's relaxed, uncomplicated approach cut through the fog created by years of reading articles and books on the subject, and gave us a new appreciation of the interaction between aperture, ISO, and speed, plus a master class on spot metering in challenging light conditions.

We're already planning another session, this time on location to improve our composition.

If you are a novice or an experienced amateur looking to finesse your skills, I'd recommended Andy without hesitation.

Andrew is very approachable and is able to cater for all abilities (I am at the beginner end of the spectrum).

The class is quite informal and we share images with classmates at each meeting which is really
interesting.

As the meetings are monthly, it leaves time to do each of the varied 'tasks' even if you have a busy schedule. The private Facebook Group gives a sense of community between meetings and you can post for feedback on photos or to ask advice. Everyone is friendly.

I took one of Andy's six month Photoclub in the pub courses and really enjoyed it. I have only dabbled in photography and don't even have a fancy camera, but that didn't matter; Andrew sets assignments that
puts you out of your comfort zone and forces you to take pictures that you would never otherwise think of taking. For that reason alone it is great; really makes you think and see things in a different way.

The feedback was always really useful and we could learn as much of the technical side of things as we wanted.

Meeting in the pub once a month is a great idea as it makes it all less formal and easy to talk about the assignment, and photography in general.

I would recommend this course to anyone, whether you are a total beginner or an experienced photographer.

My girlfriend gave me a one-to-one session with Andy as a birthday present which she selected after looking at a few (more local) options as she got a 'good feeling we'd get along' after speaking to him - she couldn't have been more right.

Although I'd had an interest for a while (mostly from a viewers perspective), prior to my session pretty much all I really knew about photography was that other people's pictures always looked better than mine, but with a baby on the way I was keen to capture the memories as best I could.

During the session Andy went through the core concepts individually and how they relate to each other as well as demonstrating how these are accessed/controlled on the camera and the effect they have on the resulting pictures, followed up with a wander around the local area (he came to me) to take some sample snaps.

Fuelled by the new found knowledge and enthusiasm I plagued Andy with questions for advice (which he was most generous with) and took the plunge and bought a new camera, lens and software.  The end result of which is a new hobby and some great pictures of the new arrival which I'll treasure forever so I couldn't be happier.

I will definitely be following up my initial session so if you're looking for some help at any skill level I couldn't recommend him enough!

Andy is very patient and explains both photo techniques and how to use your camera properly. This was very helpful to me when I has another senior moment and wondered why my camera did not select the correct settings when I had it in manual mode. The courses that Andy runs are limited to a few people at a time so you get plenty of his time to sort out any problems. Having experienced several photographic courses over the years and never got to grips with the technical side of photography, I was actually at a place where I wanted to give up. My husband gave me a voucher for 1-2-1 tuition with Andy for my birthday as a last resort to help me.

From the moment I met Andy I knew that there was hope! I have now had several 1-2-1 sessions & have learnt so much in a very brief space of time. I have found that instead of blinding you with science, Andy pares things down so that the information makes sense & is completely user friendly.

Andy has to be THE most friendly, patient & understanding teacher ever. He is always very happy to go over things again & again. His enthusiasm is infectious & he is great to be around! I highly recommend taking a course with Andy if you want to take your photography further.

After the 6 month course of photo club in the pub I have come away with a fresh creative perspective, analytical, interpersonal and software skills that have helped take my pictures to another level entirely. Sharing photos with the other groups was a huge inspiration. I learnt a lot from other members as well as from Andy. The screencast feedback was a really valueable part of each assignment because I had something to take away and improve on from every month’s project.

I was given the course as a Christmas present as I’ve been interested in photography for many years and just muddled along. I had been talking about doing a course for a while now, as it happens this fitted the bill perfectly!!

Other photographer’s photos always looked more professional and interesting than mine.  They were ‘proper’ photos that grabbed your attention whereas mine just seemed to be snapshots, which, whilst capturing the scene never stood out and never encouraged any more than a glance.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Photoclub in the pub course. It has pushed my boundaries, put me outside of my comfort zoneon occasions and most importantly made me think more creatively and technically about my photography. A novel idea for a course, Andy adds his knowledge, enthusiasm and critique which all combine to put you at ease and coaxes out any ideas and potential.

Since undertaking thecourse, my enthusiasm for photography has been re-kindled with a vengeance. I now have a direction and lots to think about!!. I feel happy using the manual modes on my camera as well as getting into the photo processing software side of things too. Hopefully I will start to use my DSLR to more of it’s potential as many of the concepts Andy taught via the assignments are now starting to become second nature.

Many thanks Andy!!

I’d been taking photos on and off for years but never really had any idea what I was doing or why or how to use my camera properly, especially since everything went digital; there are so many knobs, dials, buttons and switches and the manual is so dense and off-putting that I was stuck using automatic. Doing a few courses with Andy has changed all that. Now I take raw images, I can do aperture priority and exposure compensation, I can work out depth of field and am tentatively starting to use a tripod to take photos in poor light. And I’m processing them more effectively. At last I am starting to use my camera properly. I think I am taking better photos… or at least I understand why if they aren’t technically ‘correct’!

The best thing is that taking photos has become an integral part of my life. I now always have my camera with me and am constantly thinking about what might make a good shot. Andy’s classes are a real pleasure – they are practical, relaxed, friendly and fun. We take photos and discuss the technical issues as we go along: landscape photography on Ashdown Forest or Cuckmere Haven; street photography in Brighton or London; the monthly meetings at the Fire Station cafe; or photo club in the pub. Group or individual. Andy has a lot to offer, all highly recommended. You will be inspired, have fun and learn a thing or two as well!

I would recommend a course with Andy for everyone who wants to make headway with their own photography

I felt I need some help with portrait work and more specifically ‘street portrait’. Whilst I am in London & Andy is based in Sussex I liked the style of his work and decided to arrange a 1 day workshop with him. He kindly offered to come up to London and we spent the day out & about photographing people near the Southbank.

Andy was super friendly and helpful but more than that he was really patient . I do get a bit confused on the technical side but he he kept his explanations clear & simple . Once we left the relative safety of the café; it was time to put all the theory into practice! I was really reluctant to ask strangers if I could take their photo but with Andy there my confidence grew as the day went on. He had a lot of useful tips to share and was really clued up about where to go and how to get the best out people when you approach them.

It was all a bit nerve racking at first but it was great fun and I really learnt a lot.

I will certainly be contacting Andy again to do another workshop and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending him.

I cannot recommend Andy highly enough. Having felt that I had many gaps in my photography I had been struggling to fine tune my workflow and needed informed advice on whether I needed to invest in any equipment, plus tips on lighting and some specific Photoshop editting tasks. I had found trawling through editorials and on line reviews so arduous, not to mention totally confusing. What I needed was someone to find out my problems and give me solutions; Andy did just that. Everything I learned on my 1-2-1 day was totally relevant and I now feel inspired and confident enough to push forward into the commercial sector, safe in the knowledge that I am using all the tools to offer the highest quality of service to my clients!! In addition Andy is a great guy to spend the day with, professional, thorough and enthusiastic, I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Having enjoyed taking photos for many years I was looking for a way of learning more without feeling like I was back in the classroom. The monthly meetings in the pub are a great way to do just this. I began my first course using a compact camera and by the end I knew I was then brave enough to move into the world of a digital SLR.

Once I had the camera I was happy taking photos on ‘Auto’ mode but with Andy’s 1-2-1 tution I left with a much better idea of how to use the camera and all it’s dials. Throughout the Photo club course he has continued to help me think about the technical aspects of the photos as well as their composition.

Seeing my photos in an exhibition at the end was great. Although thinking about framing and the order of the photos was something I hadn’t considered to be so challenging – but worthwhile!
Being able to also look at photos taken by others on the course was also very interesting and useful. It was always interesting to see how others had gone about taking photos with the ‘theme’ as our focus. It has given me something other than work to think about as I drive there and back each day along with any other journey – my camera is now always with me.

I’m looking forward to a year’s worth of Photo club starting next week. I just wonder what the first theme will be?!

Being a keen but inexperienced point and clicker I’d wanted to do a photography course for a while but had been consistently put off by the thought of sitting in a classroom at the end of a hard day in the office. The Club in the Pub course was bought for me as a present, but it was everything I’d been looking for.

Despite concentrating on exploring your creative side the course gave me plenty of opportunity to learn more technical aspects of photography. With a month for each assignment, there was plenty of time to practice and experiment; I learned more and more each time I picked up my camera and the quality of my shots improved with each assignment. I was never alone either, as Andy was always available to provide support and guidance through emails or texts, and the feedback at the next meeting was always invaluable to take into the next project.

With a different assignment each month the course also gave plenty of scope for delving into subject matters you might not normally photograph. I found myself really getting into things I’d never previously thought about photographing. This course has inspired me to undertake a number of other projects already, 5 stars just doesn’t do it justice!
